This renowned, revered, Denmark-based tattoo artist has had ink on the brain for decades – his interest was sparked when he was barely past age twelve, and he got his start at the age of eighteen. The shop he founded, Royal Tattoo Denmark, is now twenty-six years old (two sets of lucky thirteens!) and draws clientele from all over the world.

As a three times ‘tattooist of the year’ Henning has found his niche somewhere between the two spheres of eastern and western tradition, creating full scale body suits with as much of a perfectionist twist as can be found in his renderings of hearts, swords and sparrows.

One of his many full body projects collected in his portfolio shows a client decorated in alternating blazes of black and colour, with eastern iconography and patterning stretching from the base of his neck to halfway down the back of his legs. His body has become a luminous canvas under Jorgensen’s needle, artfully covered with lilies, roiling wind motifs, and an electric cockerel.

It isn’t hard to make the link between his art and the fact that Horiyoshi the third is one of his greatest heroes. But he’s more than a talented inheritor of one particular style – he’s an innovator and an example of one of those rare things, a true and distinctive master of his craft. You can see it in his tattooed creatures, exquisitely rendered with both realism and a stylized polish: his butterflies, tigers, shining octopi and glittering koi.

It’s unsurprising that Henning is almost permanently booked out, elevating his tattoo art towards elite degrees of rarity – but we say it still doesn’t hurt to put yourself on his list if you’ve got some ideas involving full body suits with an artists’ expert twist. He’s ever friendly, and always open to new experiences, as his extensive time spent touring conventions proves!
