The art of tattooing and body modification has found its way into many different points of interest, such as the fine arts, pop culture or even the books you read, if you saw yesterday’s news. But what about science? Newcastle Science Festival is about to do just that, with a special event next month. As part of the festival, a night called “Designer Bodies- After Dark” will be taking place that looks at the wonderful forms of the human body and the way we choose to change it through tattooing, hair shaving and the more extreme.

Headlining the whole event is Stelarc, who is an artist and body engineer. Stelarc is more famously known for his Third Ear project, where he grew an extra ear on his arm. At the event, he is to present his artwork and projects. Along with Stelarc, there will be an exploration into the psychological and cultural implications of body modifications, where you’ll be able to test your pain threshold and see live tattooing, and if you think you’re ‘ard enough they’re looking for a brave soul to shave half their head to see how important hair is!

Other features of the event include life drawing workshops, a state- of- the- art walking skeleton, a look at how food affects our thoughts and the premiere of Paul Grimmer’s Continuum, which explores the notions of beauty and perfection.

The occasion will take place on Thursday, the 18th of March at the Centre For Life in the middle of Newcastle Upon Tyne. Tickets are free, but must be booked here.
