Apprenticeship wage and supporting the family.

Topics: 6   Posts: 40

I know this is a touchy subject but im gonna ask anyways.

I am looking for an apprenticeship, havent found one yet but im sure i will sooner or later.

The problem is my missus is panicking that i might not be able to support the family when i do get one. I have two young kids and i know its gonna be hard in the short term but in the long run i should be able to give my family all they need and be doing the job i really really love and wanna do.

Did anybody else struggle (how badly) and will i be able to live on an apprentice wage? Bearing in mind the missus does work aswell but doesnt earn alot.

Most apprentice's don't get paid. You have to support yourself.

It's likely you'll need a second, part time job.
Which means less time with the family in the short term
Hope you find something that works for you!

Expect a long road as far as making a living of any kind. I have seen tattooers with some years in the industry struggle.A second income is a great thing to have.

apprentices in tattooing don't get paid.... i'm still working full time and doing what i can on the weekends and drafting designs in the evening for now. I don't have kids but a bloody great big mortgage...!!
You could look a bit harder and try and get weekend apprenticeship.. some tattoo artists do take us on and understand.... they have been there as well.
It'll take longer and you won't have much time with the family but it is a way of working and doing what you love.. keep looking in the magazines at the classifieds and go round you local area with a portfolio.. you may get a break.. good luck though.
